Information Technology Essentials instructs students on the skills needed to become a Computer and Network Technician.

What Will I Be Doing As A Computer And Network Technician?

As technology is becoming more and more important in our daily lives, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals (also known as IT technicians) who can offer quality technical support. Computer repair technicians fill this need, and while their specific responsibilities can vary from position to position, their duties often include:

  • Installing hardware and software systems
  • Maintaining or repairing equipment
  • Troubleshooting a variety of computer issues
  • Setting up computer security measures
  • Configuring computer networks
  • Offering technical support on-site or via phone or email

Computer technicians can be found working in a variety of industries ranging from a computer technician in a retail electronics store who helps repair hardware or software, to a member of an internal IT team within large and medium sized companies, to a computer support technician who helps customers over the phone with their computer issues.

A skilled Network Technician will undertake tasks of network development and maintenance as well as be responsible for designing a network in ways that optimizes its performance.

The ideal Network Technician is a competent individual with great passion for technology with an analytical mindset that is essential for effective troubleshooting and improving a network's functions.

Responsibilities of a Network Technician can include:

  • Design and install well-functioning computer networks, connections and cabling
  • Perform troubleshooting to system failures and identify bottlenecks to ensure long term efficiency of network
  • Inspect LAN infrastructure and fix minor or major problems/bugs
  • Test and configure software and maintain and repair hardware and peripheral devices
  • Evaluate network performance and find ways of improvement
  • Organize and schedule upgrades and maintenance without deterring others from completing their own work
  • Do regular data backups to protect the organization's information
  • Provide technical direction to co-workers on computer and network usage and offer comprehensive advice and instructions
